Today
the
spring geese hunting season opened and before dawn my good fried Paul
Komonoksi, President of Nicola
Valley Fish and Game
Club,and
I arrived at the
ranchers field at set our goose decoys out. The red morning sky
promised a nice sunny day.
From
my
blind inside a willow thickets I had a perfect view of the decoy layout
and the fields where the geese would come to feed. The waiting game was
on.
We
used
this willow thicket as a blind.
Not
an
hour after sunup I heard honking in the far distance. Time to put the
coffee mug down and get ready with shotgun in hand. The first flock of
the day came direct into the decoys after the circled behind us and
came over our heads. I hate when the geese do that and missed promptly
two shoots at close range.
Two
hours
later and we had no more geese come in but I could her them down on the
lake behind us. I got up and walked to the lake shore in the hope I
could flush a few geese toward Paul. Alas they took off in the opposite
direction and I quickly grabbed the camera and took this shot instead.
At
noon we
went home without shooting any birds. That's hunting for you. There
will be other days. The season is still open for another ten days and
I'll be back in that field before then.
