Good Game Calling Begins With Quality Game Calls

deer_grunts.jpgI have to admit that I am fascinated with calling animals to my stand by mimicking their own sounds. There is a special sense of achievement and thrill in calling a trophy whitetail buck by producing the sounds of another buck or a doe in estrus. Having a gaggle of geese or ducks flying overhead and then turn around and approach my blind as I call them to me with a quality call is an amazing sight to behold. And I can get really exited when I hear from far away the thunderous gobble of a tom coming closer and closer with each yelp or purr I produce on a simple slate or box call.

The truth is that game calling works and provides good results in luring all sorts of game animals to the caller’s stand site. To be truly successful it is important to set up at the right location and just as important is to use a good quality call that will reproduce the exact sound needed. Animals are not stupid; just sounding ‘almost’ like a deer or turkey will not fool them. Animals are as familiar with their own vocalizations as humans are with theirs. Learning to make the right calls and at the exact pitch is vitality important to becoming a successful game caller.

An improperly tuned call will be incapable of producing the right sound. This was a dilemma I faced for many years and I ended up with an impressive collection of different game calls in my search for the perfect instrument.

brian.gifBut then, in 2002, I meet Brian Warner. He faced the same problems as I did with most of the mass-produced commercial game calls. Being an expert at wood crafting and animal vocalization Brian decided that it was time to make his own game calls. When Brian sent me a batch of turkey and deer calls for field-testing, I knew that I had a real winner in my hands the moment I made the first sound with it. This call sounded so real that even a turkey couldn’t tell the difference. Brian’s turkey calls soon became a hot insider tip with other hunters. The demand became so huge that Brian decided to found the Heirloom Game Call Company.

Heirloom began with turkey calls but also went on to provide deer, elk and coyote calls too. Whatever calls Brian comes up with they become an instant hit with the hunters and quite understandably so as the calls are of an extraordinary craftsmanship and sound quality. Unlike many other manufactures, Heirloom calls are not produced in some overseas country by workers that have no clue what a deer or turkey sounds like. Brian Warner still produces each call by hand and then personally tunes them individually, one at a time, to the exact tone and pitch required for a particular game species.

turkey_slate_call.jpgBrian’s philosophy is simple. “A quality product should not be so expensive that it's too expensive to enjoy!  Our calls are all made from the finest materials we can find and are reasonably priced for the average hunter.  Even on our lower priced calls, we've spared no effort to see to it that once you receive your call, it'll be one you'll be proud to carry to the woods for years to come.  Hopefully it'll become a treasured Heirloom you'll be proud to pass on to the next generation of turkey hunters in your family.”

When Brian Warner asked me to join his Heirloom Pro-Staff team I did not have to think twice about the offer. Heirloom has made a big difference in my game calling success and having experienced the quality and the authentic sound of each and every single call first hand I knew that this is a product I can put my name and reputation behind without any reservations. Finally I found the calls I have been looking for so long. Now I sound like a deer or a turkey and not just like ‘almost’ one and that has made all the difference I needed in my game calling. This year Heirloom introduced elk, predator and small game calls into its lineup of existing quality game calls. Despite the popularity of Heirloom calls and the long working hours associated with it. Brian still hand tunes each and every single call before the order is shipped out and he stays true to his favorite quote: “If I am not one hundred percent convinced of the call’s quality it will not leave my work shop.”
